Evaluation of the potential of bank infiltration at the Ivančice site

Project background
The confluence area of the Jihlava and Rokytná rivers is an important source of good quality drinking water for the Ivančice Union of Water Supply and Sewerage. At present, average abstraction is around 10 l/s; however, the theoretical potential for use is significantly higher. Despite a decrease in effective precipitation totals, this catchment area is able to make intensive use of the induced sources of bank infiltration.
Project aims
Using in situ technical work (5 collection boreholes) to confirm the results of the model study regarding the highest long-term usable yield of the area.
Project methodology
The model study specified the water level and balance conditions in different collection conditions. The model study hypothesized that clearing the Jihlava riverbed would probably increase the intensity of bank infiltration from the north and thus the overall yield of the entire structure. Model simulations indicated that the Quaternary sediments allow for intensification of groundwater abstraction. The model assumed 25 l/s as the highest long-term usable yield, using the new collection facilities. Using a larger number of collection wells at lower intakes should lead to a more even use of the structure and lower hydraulic gradients around the wells. Based on the above model results, a new study was formulated which confirmed the expected conclusions through technical work, specifically five new collection wells.
