Historical water management objects, their value, function, and significance for the present

The project runs between 2018 and 2022; it is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic within the Programme of Applied Research and Development of National and Cultural Identity (NAKI II).

Starting points and project aims

The aim of the project is to create a methodology for the evaluation of a specific group of industrial heritage monuments – historic water management structures. The methodological procedure will contribute to the correct identification, systematic documentation, and setting of objective evaluation criteria of water management objects in the context of their spatio-temporal development, based on an interdisciplinary approach.

Methodology and benefits

In order to set up and verify the proposed methodological procedures for evaluation, and to compare the development of different types of historic water management facilities in different natural and socioeconomic conditions, systematic field research is carried out in selected five pilot areas and analysis of causes of development of these facilities over time, archival research, and documentation of the technical condition of the selected objects.

The project outputs will be a significant contribution to further research activities, for the rescue, restoration, protection, or defining a new use of this specific type of industrial heritage monuments.
